We have all been deeply moved by our experiences here in Peru and hopefully will be able to share them with anyone that wants to listen. As we leave today we can only hope that others will be able to find this opportunity in their futures and that we may someday return.

Peru
Well, here we are on officially the final day of our experience. We have had the opportunity to see how things run on a daily bases. We have visited the clinic and assisted in checking people in for their appointments (Cassie also got to visit with the pharmacy staff) we went on home visits with the social worker "Maria" and have add opportunities to interact with the children in the daycare setting and an afternoon in the newly developed park for exercise class and a volleyball.
This truly is an eye opening experience for those of you that are ready to "see" the world in a different light.

In Peru
Greetings from Peru..Yesterday we rode along with the meal delivery van that delivers meals (soup, fish, vegetables and drink) to 700 people six days a week! The people and the place is just amazing, you really must see it with your own eyes to have an appreciation of the magnitude of the conditions and the wonderful work that Father Alex is doing for the people of Alto Cayma everyday!

Reception at St. Elizabeth Hospital
Fr. Alex Busuttil was here in Wisconsin and he was able to attend a reception that was held at St. Elizabeth Hospital on Friday, October 21 from 6pm-8pm. It was a great opportunity for those that had traveled to Alto Cayma Peru in the past and those traveling November 5 to be able to meet Fr. Alex. He updated those present on what is happening in Alto Cayma and future opportunities for those that wish to support the Mission. Please contact Kristie Marx is you would like more information on how you can support the Mission in Alto Cayma Peru. kmarx@affinityhealth.org

Neonatal Resuscitation in Peru last week of April
Brenna Reimer and Mary Williams employees at St. Elizabeth Birthplace and Dr. Robert (Bob) Gehringer during the last week of April in the Colca Valley. We taught neonatal resuscitation, using the basic parts of the official NRP course of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, in spanish, to a total of over 40 nurses, doctors, and midwives in 3 rural health centers in Chivay, Callalli, and Cabanaconde, Peru with the collaboration of Health Bridges International (the organization that I work with primarily and that has facilitated Affinity IMPACT PERU trips), Medical Ministry International, and the Peruvian Ministry of Health. We taught in Callalli at 12,500 feet and crossed a 15,500 foot plateau to get there. I'm an NRP instructor, and have taught NRP 7 courses in Peru and Honduras so far in 2010. Our mannequins were previously used at St E a few years ago. I collect gently used bags and masks from St E, ThedaClark , and Bellin and we were able to leave at least one infant ventilation bag and mask for each of about 20 small health posts (staffed by nurses and technicians) throughout the Colca Valley. These are places generally without oxygen, from 4 to 8 hours from a hospital, and infant mortality is much higher than in the US. The key to newborn resuscitation is positive pressure ventilation, given very early when a baby isn't breathing adequately, hopefully to avoid more complex and serious complications. I'm currently working with the Medical Director for the state of Arequipa to potentially arrange NRP training in all of the 30-some rural health centers throughout the state over the next year. These are often in remote and amazingly beautiful mountainous locations, and we'll need plenty more donated and collected bags and masks, as well as professional volunteers to help with the teaching.
Thanks, Bob

Blog of Peru through Thursday
From Dorothy:
Hola! Que pasa? I am about to be picked up by Padre Alex to be taken to the airport, so am going to post my blog for Friday later. In the meantime, hopefully this photo of us which we took last night, will be delivered safely to the blogsite. I love my team members and before leaving this guest house, put my hand on each one's bedroom door and pray a blessing, for their work to prosper and their lives to generate goodness and joy, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, as befits a life well-lived.
