Wednesday Feb. 4

Today we went to Goyeneche Hospital which is the hospital for the very poor. WOW what a humbling experience. It was like going back to 1920s or so. They are going to be celebrating their 97 year as a hospital.

It was started by the nuns. They are starting to do major renovation because it was getting so run down. We visited the different wards. The Peds department had 3 to 4 children to a room. There was a woman that was there with her own ill child in the hospital she took the time to hold and comfort a little child that was from the Orphanage that was crying all the time. She was showing that child so much compassion! The other wards are large rooms with 20 to 30 beds lined up. There is no privacy or confidentiality. On the OB ward the babies stay right in the same bed with the mother. They did have a 4 bed ICU unit that surprisingly their had monitors and defibs. available. Oncology radiation therapy was 60 cobalt machine is what they used. They had it for 35 years. Like the "Marketing" person said they provide excellent care with the resources they have. We will share the photos once we get back into the states. We are extremely blessed in the states to have all that we have.

  1. Goyeneche Hospital, was the first hospital built on the city, but it's still one of the most popular hospitals of the city, althought the situation in it (and in all the hospitals for poor people) is very sad, there's not technology for a good healthcare, the healthcare in peru is very expensive, maybe not more than the 40% of the population in the country is able to pay a good clinic. the health system it's still very limited for the poor people.
